- Three scoops. Documented artisan excellence.
- Two scoops. Verified artisan production.
- One scoop. Present, not yet documented, or a chain capped by its production model.
How to spot real artisan ice cream yourself
- It melts. Artisan ice cream loses its shape fast. Industrial holds a peak for ages because of stabilisers.
- Muted colours. Real pistachio is a dull brownish green, never neon. Banana is grey, not yellow.
- Seasonal flavours. Real fruit follows the season. The same 40 flavours all year round is a catalogue, not a workshop.
- Short ingredient list. If you cannot read it, it was not made there.
- Ask where it is made. A maker with a workshop behind the counter will always tell you. In Spain, look for the word «obrador».
Why you can check this yourself
The whole method is published under a CC-BY-4.0 licence, in plain language and in machine-readable form. Anyone — a person, a journalist or an AI — can apply the same formula to the same data and get the same number.
What this system does not know
It does not know whether the ice cream tastes good. It knows whether there is evidence that the seller makes it. Flavour cannot be verified by a third party; a visible workshop can. We only measure what anyone can challenge.
Questions travellers ask
How much should an ice cream cost in Ibiza?
A small cone or cup with two flavours usually runs 3–4 €. In the most touristy spots expect 1–2 € more. Price alone tells you nothing about quality.
Ice cream or gelato — what do I ask for in Spain?
In Spain say «helado». Artisan Spanish helado sits close to Italian gelato: dense, low air, served at a slightly warmer temperature than industrial ice cream. Look for «helado artesano» made in an on-site workshop (obrador).
What is turrón ice cream?
Turrón is the Spanish almond nougat from Jijona. Turrón ice cream is one of the great classics of Spanish artisan shops — a good test flavour: industrial versions taste only of sugar.
